🎼 The Composition Section of the Enescu Competition 2026 celebrates its laureates and a new generation of composers.
🏆 Three works received awards in this year’s Composition Section:
Jinhan Xiao - Quadruple Blue: Four Odes to the Abyssal Seas
Adrien Sassier - Les Ailes du Désespoir
Adrien Sassier - Rêves en Fleur
The winners were selected by the Composition Section Jury, chaired by Zygmunt Krauze, alongside Dan Dediu, Johanna Doderer, Adrian Iorgulescu, Sarah Kirkland Snider, Steven Mackey, Gabriela Ortiz, Adrian Pop, Doina Rotaru, Mark Simpson and Elsa Vautrain.
The Opening Concert at the Romanian Athenaeum on 23 August featured the world premiere of The Stone and the Ivy by Diego Santamaria, winner of the Originality Prize at the Enescu Competition 2024. The work was performed by the Romanian Radio National Orchestra, conducted by Cristian Măcelaru.
Beyond the awards, the 2026 edition opened new spaces for contemporary creation. For the first time, the Competition introduced a Composition Masterclass, where young composers worked with Zygmunt Krauze, Sarah Kirkland Snider and Steven Mackey, under the coordination of Dan Dediu.
New music also became part of the instrumental sections through three commissioned works: Waves of Gravel by Malika Kishino for Cello, Still Life with Fallen Stone by Lembit Beecher for Violin and Hammers and Tongs by Karim Al-Zand for Piano.
🎥 From new scores and artistic dialogue to world premieres and the stage, discover the story of the Composition Section in the official aftermovie.
