What was everyday life like in Pakistan before flush toilets, modern sanitation and today’s comfortable bathrooms? In this deeply nostalgic episode, we travel back to the Pakistan of the 1970s and 1980s a time when toilets were built on rooftops, water had to be carried upstairs in buckets, and simple necessities like bathing could become a community experience. We revisit the forgotten world of rooftop latrines, old metal water coolers, aluminum and brass lotas, traditional mosque bathrooms, sanitation workers, public hygiene and the dramatic arrival of the flush system. Then we enter the old barber shops places that were much more than places for haircuts and shaves. They had hot-water baths, oil massages, newspapers shared among customers, traditional shaving rituals and long waiting-room conversations. A single newspaper could travel from one person to another, from one shop to another, and sometimes through several families in the same day.
