Why Ships Fly Flags From Countries They May Never Visit

A merchant ship's flag can differ from its owner's home, its crew's nationalities, and every stop on its route. We separate registration from ownership, explain open registries, and follow the responsibilities of flag states and port inspectors. Map Motive explores how geography and engineering shape everyday life.
