The Real Reason GTA 6 Skips PC at Launch

A new report says the wait could be a lot shorter than it has ever been, so in this video I go through what has actually been reported, why Rockstar has kept PC players waiting for twenty years, and what you can do on launch night if you game on PC. THE REPORT On October 13, GamesBeat reported that the PC version of GTA 6 is planned for the first three months of 2027, so January, February or March. GamesBeat says the information came from four people familiar with Rockstar's plans, all of them anonymous, and Rockstar did not respond to its request for comment. That makes it a report, not an official date. If it is right, PC players would wait somewhere between two and four months after the console launch. ROCKSTAR'S PC HISTORY Two to four months would be fast by Rockstar standards. GTA IV reached PC about eight months after consoles. L.A. Noire made PC players wait six months. GTA V launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013 and reached PC in April 2015, nineteen months later. Red Dead Redemption 2 arrived on consoles in October 2018 and on PC in November 2019, thirteen months later. The original Red Dead Redemption had no proper PC release until a port in October 2024, roughly fourteen years after launch. The one exception is Max Payne 3, which came out on PC in the same month as consoles in 2012. WHY ROCKSTAR STARTS ON CONSOLE Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has said Rockstar starts on console because the core audience for a game like GTA is console players, and that audience has to be served first. Asked whether a Sony marketing deal was behind the console window, he said no. In the video I also cover the reasons people in the industry point to, clearly labelled as their view and mine, not Rockstar's: fixed console hardware, cheating and piracy on PC, and the way GTA V sold again on every new platform. WHAT HAS CHANGED Zelnick also said that when he joined Take-Two in 2007, PC was about five percent of sales for some of its big series, and that today PC can be forty five to fifty percent of sales for a big release. Making PC players wait nineteen months meant something very different in 2013 than it would in 2026. THE CLOUD STREAMING RUMOUR Earlier this month, reports suggested Xbox had something planned that would let PC players stream GTA 6 from day one. On October 7, Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball said the game will not be streaming exclusively or to PC. There is no back door for launch day. GTA 6 ONLINE AND FIVEM Bloomberg has reported that GTA 6 Online is expected in 2027, and in 2023 Rockstar bought Cfx.re, the team behind the FiveM roleplay platform for GTA V on PC. Whether the PC version and Online arrive close together is speculation, and I label it that way in the video. WHAT PC PLAYERS CAN DO ON NOVEMBER 19 Buy a PS5 or Xbox Series console if you want to play on day one. Mute spoiler keywords now if you plan to wait.
