In January 1918, Albert Einstein wrote to his wife, Mileva Marić, asking for a divorce. To get it, he offered her the money from a Nobel Prize he had not won yet. He won it nearly five years later, and the money went to her.
You may have heard that the prize money was a secret payment because Mileva co-created relativity. The letters tell a more complicated story. We follow seven choices in Mileva's life, from a school in Zurich to a stroke in 1948, look at both sides of the co-authorship debate, and trace where the prize money actually went. At the end, there's a line she wrote to her closest friend around 1909.

About the quotes and numbers
Einstein's and Mileva's letters were written in German. Quotes are published English versions: the 1918 letter as quoted in English by Barbara Wolff (Albert Einstein Archives) and The Marginalian; Mileva's letters to Helene Savić in the English version given by Pauline Gagnon in Scientific American (2016).
The ledger of the prize money follows Barbara Wolff's reconstruction from the Albert Einstein Archives. It is an archive reconstruction, not a full audit. Accounts of who was to blame for the losses differ.
Whether Mileva contributed to Einstein's scientific work is contested. This video presents the main arguments on both sides.
