In the spring of 1930, thousands of men across the American South saw a job posting that felt like a miracle during the worst economic collapse the country had ever known. Steady wages. Steady meals. Work in the hills of West Virginia, far from the farms and lumber camps that had stopped paying them months earlier. For men with nothing left to lose, the offer looked like the one door still open. Within months, hundreds of them were dying. Not from an accident on the job, not from an outbreak, not from anything violent enough to reach a newspaper beyond their own remote valley. From the air itself. From dust so fine it could not be seen, filling their lungs a little more with every single shift inside a mountain the company running the project already knew was laced with poison. Between 1930 and 1935, inside a three mile tunnel cut straight through Gauley Mountain, a construction project quietly became the deadliest known industrial disaster in the history of the United States, and almost nobody outside a handful of small Appalachian towns ever found out. This is the story of what happened inside that mountain, who was sent in to die, how the company kept it hidden for as long as it possibly could, and why most Americans alive today have still never heard the number 764.
