McDonald's is one of the world's most familiar restaurant brands. Its financial statements tell a less familiar story. How do franchisees, property interests, rent and royalties fit together behind the Golden Arches? This HIDDEN LEDGER documentary traces the McDonald brothers' Speedee Service System, Ray Kroc's expansion, and the economics of a network where most restaurants are operated by others. We follow the contracts and locations that support the system, the different risks borne by corporate and franchisees, and why the food still matters. At year-end 2025, 43,317 of McDonald's 45,356 restaurants were franchised under various structures. McDonald's FY2025 rent revenue from franchised restaurants was $10,442 million (about $10.44B). This is a worldwide corporate figure, not total company revenue or the rent of any one restaurant. HIDDEN LEDGER explores money, business and power inside familiar companies.
