濠上知魚|The Joy of Fish Beyond Knowing 有人站在橋上。 🐟 You Are Not a Fish, How Do You Know the Fish Is Happy? The famous debate on the Hao River in the Zhuangzi appears to be about whether fish are happy, but it is actually about how humans understand reality. Huizi asked, “You are not a fish. How do you know the fish is happy?” This reflects a mindset that values logic and proof. Zhuangzi, however, perceived the fish's joy through direct observation and intuitive understanding. Their disagreement represents two different ways of approaching life itself. In modern life, we often act like Huizi. When we see someone successful, we assume they must be happy. When we see someone quiet, we assume they must be troubled. We constantly judge others through our own standards without truly understanding their circumstances. Many misunderstandings begin from these assumptions. Perhaps the deeper question is not whether the fish is happy, but whether we have become too accustomed to defining the world through our own limited perspective. 🪷 分別識的世界,總有對錯輸贏 🪷 The World of Discriminating Consciousness Is Full of Winners and Losers 佛法稱這種不斷比較、判斷、貼標籤的心為「分別識」。 In Buddhism, this constant process of comparing, judging, and labeling is called “discriminating consciousness.” It helps us recognize things, but it can also trap us in attachment. For example, when a supervisor criticizes us at work, it begins as mere sound, yet our interpretations transform it into resentment, anger, or self-doubt. People today often say, “I was hijacked by my emotions.” In reality, it is often not the event itself but the story our mind creates around it. A single comment, glance, or expression from someone else can occupy our thoughts for days and disturb our peace. If all suffering came from external conditions, changing our environment should bring liberation. Yet even when circumstances improve, inner turmoil often remains. Does this suggest that the root problem lies not outside us, but in how we perceive reality? 🌕 無分別智,不是沒有判斷 🌕 Non-Discriminating Wisdom Is Not the Absence of Discernment 很多人誤以為「無分別智」就是不思考、不判斷,甚至什麼都不在乎。 Many people mistakenly believe that “non-discriminating wisdom” means not thinking, not judging, or not caring. In fact, it is the opposite. It does not eliminate wisdom; it transcends attachment. One still recognizes right and wrong, yet is no longer controlled by emotional reactions and personal biases. Like Zhuangzi standing on the bridge, he saw the fish swimming freely without trying to prove himself right or win an argument. He simply observed and experienced what was before him. This state of mind closely resembles the Buddhist practice of mindful awareness. Many questions in life do not have absolute answers. What matters is not who wins the argument, but whether we come closer to truth. When the mind no longer clings to being right, a wider reality reveals itself. As discrimination gradually loosens, wisdom naturally emerges. Just as the song Knowing the Fish on the Hao River suggests: The fish swims in the water, the person stands on the bridge; discriminating consciousness sees separation, while non-discriminating wisdom sees harmony. 🪷🌊
