Theme From "Big Wave" // Tatsuro Yamashita (Bass Cover)

Back with an outtake of a now-removed-by-youtube pickup comparison video (hence the irregular camera angle), in which I demonstrate the capabilities of Seymour Duncan Antiquity II pickups in a 1987 Squier Jazz Bass. This video turned a bit into a bass philosophy video, as it contains a rather interesting and important move on the part of Koki Itoh, Tatsuro Yamashita's longtime bassist. He chooses to slap entirely on this 60's surf pop-inspired song instead of simply employing fingerstyle or a pick, as would be period correct. It seems out of place but in practice, I found slapping on this song to not only sound great, but to be the perfect compliment to the song and the rest of the , which teaches us a lot about the relationship between technique and style (and the limitations of such a relationship).
