In 2025, someone paid $100,000 for a wild foal on Chincoteague Island, Virginia, and couldn't take it home. The money went to the volunteer fire company that owns the wild horses. On this small island off Virginia's Eastern Shore, cowboys swim ponies across the channel every July, rockets launch next door, and the beach itself is moving toward the mainland. So how do people really live here, and why do they stay?
In this video we explore Chincoteague and Assateague: the causeway and the oyster trade, the mystery of where the wild horses came from, the Pony Swim and the record auction, Misty of Chincoteague and the 1962 Ash Wednesday storm, NASA's Wallops Flight Facility, and the plan to move the beach as the island shifts.
