What do you need at home before a winter power cut in the UK? These 12 prepping items come straight from official UK advice (GOV.UK Prepare, the British Red Cross, the NHS and the Energy Saving Trust), with real prices in pounds from UK shops. When the power goes off in a British home, the boiler goes with it. So do gas ovens, heat pumps and home internet, and the mobile phone can stop too if the local mast is affected. Most UK power cuts are short and local, but the government says wider and longer outages can happen. This list is about being ready for the longer one: power cut essentials for a UK winter, from a camping stove for outdoor use only to a power bank for your phone. You will see: bottled water, draught-proofing and keeping one warm room, ready-to-eat tinned food, the stop tap, blankets and layers, a carbon monoxide alarm, a battery or wind-up torch and radio, a first aid kit, spare batteries and a power bank. Plus the free Priority Services Register and what to do before the power comes back. SAFETY: never burn anything that produces fumes inside your home, a garage or a tent. That includes a camping stove, a barbecue, a gas or paraffin heater and a portable generator. The NHS says carbon monoxide is colourless and has no smell, and can make you seriously ill. If you suspect a leak: stop using the appliance if you can, go outside and get medical advice (NHS 111, or 999 in an emergency) before going back in. National Gas Helpline: 0800 111 999.
