The determination of the fluid flow rate in order to achieve a desired voidage for a fluidised bed, assuming that the bed behaves in a particulate manner (not bubbling). Clearly, the system illustrated is a gas fluidised bed, not a liquid bed, so bubbling is highly likely, but a particulate fluidisation calculation can be used to provide a bed height expansion that is likely to give a higher value than what would occur during bubbling. In bubbling bed systems there is often a small amount of bed expansion just after the fluidisation point, before bubbling starts to occur.
