On this day in 1965, Singapore became independent from neighboring Malaysia; of which it had been a part of for two years until some disagreements between the two set in. Prior to 1963, Singapore was a British colony. This song was written in 1958 by Zubir Said during Singapore's independence movement. It was originally the anthem of their city council; the following year they got self-government (they were technically still a colony though) and the song was edited and made the anthem of Singapore. Finally, in 1965, upon independence from Malaysia, the song became the official national anthem. In case you are wondering, "Majulah Singapura" means "Onward Singapore" in Malay.
