Yesterday, the Provincial Government of Bohol celebrated the 130th Birth Anniversary of President Carlos P. Garcia, the most illustrious Boholano. He was born in the Town of Talibon, and right across the plaza where a historical marker of him was installed stands the marvelous Talibon Cathedral Parish Church of the Most Holy Trinity, the seat of the Diocese of Talibon that is celebrating their 40th anniversary this year so we were blessed to have visited and attended Mass in their cathedral this 2026. This is probably where he was baptized and given the name of the saint whose feast day falls on the date of his birth, a practice which is now widely forgotten.
Kabalo ba mo? When Ferdinand Magellan and his crew were defeated at the Battle of Mactan, those who remained alive stayed in the kingdom of Rajah Humabon whose baptismal name was also Carlos. When Lapu-Lapu and his people pressured Humabon to kill the remaining men of Magellan, some of them rowed boats towards the Island of Bohol, landing on the towns of Talibon and Getafe. Their ship on the expedition? It was called Trinidad and this may be the reason why there is a strong and widespread devotion to the Triune God throughout the island province, with this cathedral and Loay Church as the most prominent parishes dedicated to the Blessed Trinity.
The history of the Most Holy Trinity Cathedral, commonly known as Talibon Cathedral, traces its roots to the early arrival of Spanish missionaries in Bohol. Jesuit missionaries established their presence in the province in 1596, and Father Juan de Torres arrived in the Talibon area that same year. By 1722 or 1724, Talibon was recognized as a parish under Jesuit administration, functioning as a key center for evangelization in northern Bohol. Following the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1768, the Augustinian Recollects eventually took over its administration, though for a period the area was overseen as part of Inabanga. In 1832, Recollect Father Ramon de Santa Ana officially assumed the role of its first parish priest.
The construction of the present-day stone church began in 1858 and was fully completed in 1899. The structure was designed by Domingo de Escondrillas, who was also known for his architectural work on colonial-era structures in neighboring Cebu. During this construction period, Recollect friar Father Jose Sanchez spearheaded major improvements, most notably adding the prominent quadrangular bell tower to the church's epistle flank between 1868 and 1875, while Father Nemesio Llorente oversaw the interior design. Architecturally, the building exhibits a beautiful blend of Earthquake Baroque and Neoclassical styles. Unlike most heritage churches in Bohol, it features no entrance portico, instead greeting visitors with an arch portal flanked by niches containing statues of St. Augustine of Hippo and St. Nicholas of Tolentino.
A major milestone in the church's history occurred on January 9, 1986, when Pope St. John Paul II issued a papal bull canonically erecting the Roman Catholic Diocese of Talibon. The parish church was subsequently elevated to cathedral status, formally establishing it as the seat of the bishop and a central node among the Catholic ecclesiastical jurisdictions in the Philippines. Recognizing its deep historical and architectural significance, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines declared the cathedral a National Historical Landmark, unveiling a Level II historical marker on March 15, 2015. Most recently, comprehensive preservation renovations to the historic edifice were completed in 2024.
At 4:06, you will see the 8-ray Sun of the Philippine flag proudly embedded in the dome of the cruciform cathedral. This is heartwarmingly symbolic and significant because Talibon once gave her son to be the Father of the Philippines who was the 8th. May many more people from Talibon offer their skills, talents, intelligence and wisdom to the service of our nation all for the Glory of the Almighty God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
