“I AM”: Was Jesus Saying He Is God?

Did Jesus Claim to Be God? When Jesus said “I AM,” was He simply describing Himself—or was He claiming the divine identity revealed in the Old Testament? In John 8, Jesus says, “Before Abraham was, I am.” His opponents understood the statement as something far more serious than an ordinary claim about His identity. But John records several other “I AM” statements: I am the bread of life. I am the light of the world. I am the good shepherd. I am the true vine. So what was Jesus actually claiming?
