Sylvia was a 16-year-old girl living in Indianapolis, Indiana during the summer of 1966. Her parents were poverty-stricken and not very stable. They were only able to find work as carnival workers and traveled through the summer months. During this time, they made the decision to leave Sylvia and her younger sister Jenny in the care of a woman they hardly knew named Gertrude Baniszewski. Little did they know, they'd lose one of their daughters in the process. Years later, there have been two movies that are loosely based on Sylvia's story, one called "An American Crime," starring Ellen Page, James Franco, Catherine Keener, and Evan Peters.
