Construction took just over four years. Construction began on January 5, 1933, and the bridge opened to vehicular traffic on May 29, 1937. Cost: $35 million dollars in the 1930s, approximately $1.5 billion in 2016 dollars. The name Golden Gate does not refer to the Bridge’s color; it refers to the entrance to the San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean, called the Golden Gate Strait. A suspension bridge is the structural opposite of an arch. The curving cables of a suspension bridge are under constant tension. The opposite, or upside-down, image of those curves looks like an arch. The forces in the arch, compression, are the opposite of the tension forces the suspension bridge cables experience. The Presidio National Park is located in northwest San Francisco right at the entrance to the Golden Gate Straight, where the Pacific Ocean meets San Francisco Bay! Visiting Presidio National Park The Presidio NP is at the southern end of the Golden Gate Bridge and is crossed by the bridge approach road. The park has many wooded areas, hills, and scenic vistas overlooking the Golden Gate itself, the Bridge, San Francisco Bay, and the Pacific Ocean. The Presidio of San Francisco (originally El Presidio Real de San Francisco or The Royal Fortress of Saint Francis) is a park and former U.S. Army post on the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula in San Francisco, California, and is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It had been a fortified location since September 17, 1776, when New Spain established the presidio to gain a foothold in Alta California and the San Francisco Bay. Mexico took it in 1820, then passed it to the United States in 1848. As part of a military reduction under the Base Realignment in 1988, Congress voted to end the Presidio's status as an active U.S. Army base. On October 1, 1994, it was transferred to the National Park Service, ending 219 years of military use and beginning its next phase of public use. #goldengatebridge #presidio #visitingsanfrancisco #thingstodo #pacificocean #crissyfield #waterfront #fortpoint #sanfrancisco #bridgeview #nationalpark #alcatraz #sunset #bayarea #travel #tourism #fog
