We Waited 16 Years for This | Japanese Fans React to PSYREN Episode 1 [Japanese Reaction]
PSYREN, the cult-favorite Weekly Shonen Jump manga by Toshiaki Iwashiro (2007-2010), finally got its anime adaptation 16 years after the series ended. In Episode 1, "Urban Legend", Ageha Yoshina finds a mysterious red telephone card, his classmate Sakurako Amamiya disappears, and one ringing payphone later he's standing in a wasteland.
Japanese fans on X lost it over payphones and telephone cards showing up in a 2026 anime, the 5 million yen price tag, Yoko Hikasa voicing the creepy phone survey, Yuki Kaji showing up as a one-episode occult club president, and Ageha having a barbecue on the principal's car. Longtime readers also talked about what got changed for modern TV, the very Heisei-era opening and ending, and finally seeing a manga they voted for every week in the Jump survey come to life.
We also mixed in comments from 5ch, the Animanch forum, and YouTube comments on the official opening, ending and trailer.
No manga spoilers beyond Episode 1.
All comments were collected from Japanese online forums, social media, and comment sections, then translated into English.
Translations are not word-for-word; we adapted slang so it reads naturally in English.
