With every SPECIAL attribute starting at 1, even Fallout 4’s opening becomes a serious challenge. Inside Vault 111, we collect valuable early-game resources, uncover what really happened, unlock our first achievement and test just how limiting VATS can be with terrible stats. Back in Sanctuary, we reunite with Codsworth, loot the settlement, collect weapons, magazines, outfits and crafting materials, secure a reliable source of purified water and make the first crucial upgrades to our 10mm pistol and character build. A normal Fallout 4 character receives 21 additional SPECIAL points during character creation, but we give up all of them and use the Custom SPECIAL mod to keep every starting attribute at its minimum. This means that most perks initially remain out of reach and many early level-ups have to be spent simply improving SPECIAL attributes instead of immediately building a powerful character. Combat in this Fallout 4 walkthrough is also restricted to VATS only. Every attack against an enemy must be performed through VATS, meaning low Perception directly affects our accuracy while low Agility severely limits the number of attacks we can make. Powerful weapons alone therefore cannot compensate for weak character stats, putting much more emphasis on character building, equipment choices, Action Point management and Fallout 4's RPG mechanics. Finally, this remains a completionist Fallout 4 walkthrough. The goal is to explore every location, complete every quest, unlock every achievement and experience as much of the game's story, dialogue, lore and content as possible. Survival Mode adds further restrictions including disabled fast travel, limited saving and additional resource management, making careful exploration, crafting and settlement building especially important throughout the playthrough. Fallout 4 is an open-world action role-playing game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and originally released in 2015. Set in the post-apocalyptic Commonwealth around Boston, Fallout 4 follows the Sole Survivor after emerging from Vault 111 more than 200 years after a nuclear war. The game combines first- and third-person combat with the VATS targeting system, SPECIAL-based character progression, extensive exploration, quests, crafting and settlement building across a large open world.
