𝗘‑𝗕𝗜𝗞𝗘 𝗖𝗥𝗔𝗖𝗞𝗗𝗢𝗪𝗡: Santa Monica Police Impound 12 Sur-Ron–Style Bikes at Beach Charging Station

SANTA MONICA, CA — On Saturday, July 26, 2025, the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) impounded 12 Sur-Ron–type electric motorcycles during a targeted enforcement operation at the beach parking lot on Barnard Way. Officers from SMPD’s motor and bicycle units responded to a group of riders who had parked the high-powered electric vehicles at a public charging station. Two flatbed tow trucks arrived on scene, each transporting six of the impounded bikes. No citations were issued at the time. According to an SMPD statement released following the operation, the seized vehicles were classified as off-highway vehicles that do not meet California’s legal standards for electric bicycles. These models often lack operable pedals, exceed speeds of 40 mph, and cannot be registered for street use, making them illegal to operate on public roads, bike paths, or sidewalks. The department cited growing community complaints and serious safety concerns as key reasons for ramping up enforcement. “While these electric bikes may look street legal, they are not permitted on public roads,” the SMPD warned, adding that many of the impounded vehicles were misleadingly perceived as compliant e-bikes. Under California law, legal electric bicycles must feature working pedals and a motor rated at no more than 750 watts. Class 1 and 2 e-bikes are limited to 20 mph, while Class 3 models—pedal-assist only—can reach 28 mph and are subject to helmet and age restrictions. Sur-Ron–style vehicles exceed these thresholds and are classified as electric dirt bikes, intended solely for off-road use. Owners may retrieve the impounded vehicles upon proof of ownership and payment of applicable towing and storage fees.
