Part 6 of When Love Isn’t the Problem
Have you ever looked at your spouse on vacation and thought:
Ohhhh. There you are.
There’s the person I married.
The funny one.
The spontaneous one.
The affectionate one.
The person who wants to sit somewhere beautiful, order dessert, stay up too late, and actually talk to me.
And then you come home.
The suitcases hit the bedroom floor.
The emails start.
The calendar reappears.
The laundry multiplies.
The bills show up.
Someone needs groceries.
Someone needs a ride.
And suddenly Vacation Marriage has left the building. 😂
In Episode 133, we explore a surprisingly important question:
Why do some couples genuinely enjoy each other more when they’re away?
Vacation doesn’t necessarily create a better marriage.
It changes the conditions around the marriage.
It often removes: work, household responsibilities, rushing, chores, children’s schedules, home projects, and constant reminders of everything that needs to be done.
And it adds: novelty, beauty, rest, conversation, play, shared experiences, affection, attention, and margin.
For a few days, you may stop relating primarily as co-parents, household managers, financial partners, chauffeurs, schedulers, and problem-solvers…
and start relating as friends again.
And that tells us something.
Because sometimes the problem isn’t:
“We don’t love each other anymore.”
Sometimes it is:
“We barely experience each other outside of responsibility.”
In This Episode
I talk about:
• why vacation changes the conditions around a marriage
• how chronic stress affects patience, affection, humor, and desire
• why rest and margin are not laziness
• what “Vacation Jack” and “Vacation Danielle” can teach us about connection
• why friendship can quietly disappear beneath household management
• the importance of curiosity in long-term marriage
• why novelty and shared experiences matter
• why play and laughter are not spiritually shallow
• how everyday roles can bury the husband-wife relationship
• practicing connection before correction
• the danger of waiting until life “slows down”
• creating fun without creating financial stress
• why vacations cannot repair problems couples refuse to address
• how Jesus modeled withdrawal, rest, prayer, and return
• why your marriage is a relationship—not another project to optimize
• how to create “micro-vacations” in ordinary life
• what attention communicates to your spouse
• and how marriage can reflect not only God’s faithfulness—but His goodness, joy, beauty, and generosity too
The Vacation Marriage Audit
One of the practical exercises in this episode asks couples to look at a trip where they felt genuinely connected and identify:
What disappeared?
Work email?
Chores?
Screens?
Rushing?
Kids’ schedules?
Family demands?
Home projects?
What appeared?
Sleep?
Conversation?
Physical affection?
Adventure?
Beauty?
Walking?
Music?
Good food?
Playfulness?
Undistracted time?
Then ask:
Which of those conditions could we realistically recreate at home?
The goal is not to make real life look like vacation.
The goal is to learn from the conditions where your friendship tends to thrive.
Remove. Add. Protect.
I also introduce a simple framework:
REMOVE
What consistently gets between us?
ADD
What brings us alive together?
PROTECT
What is already helping us connect that needs a boundary around it?
Maybe that means phones out of the bedroom.
A weekly walk.
A protected date night.
Coffee together before church.
A monthly adventure.
Or simply fifteen minutes after work where you connect before discussing logistics.
Small rhythms create culture.
