There were several things a vampire knew better than to fall in love with.
Sunlight was near the top of the list.
Lucien had avoided it for nearly three centuries. He traveled beneath moonlight, slept behind heavy curtains and considered sunrise something best appreciated through other people's descriptions. This arrangement had served him perfectly well until he came to Embervale in search of a stolen relic and met Aurelia.
She was, unfortunately, almost made of sunlight.
Aurelia belonged to an ancient fae bloodline known as the Sunborn. Her skin was always warm, golden sparks appeared in her hair when she used magic and strong emotions could make her glow brightly enough to illuminate a room.
Lucien found this extremely inconvenient.
He found it worse when he discovered that she had stolen his relic.
Their first meeting ended with accusations, an argument in the middle of Embervale and Aurelia becoming so irritated that every lantern nearby became unnecessary. Lucien retreated beneath a shop awning.
But Aurelia was not the thief he imagined.
Someone else wanted the relic because it could reveal where vampires hid during daylight. Aurelia had stolen it first to keep it from them. Destroying it required a journey to ancient ruins beyond the valley, and neither trusted the other enough to carry it alone.
So they went together.
Their journey developed an unusual rhythm. Lucien preferred darkness. Aurelia's magic grew strongest beneath the sun. They traveled mostly at dawn and twilight, when neither possessed quite the advantage they wanted.
At first, they argued about everything.
Then, gradually, they stopped.
Lucien learned that Aurelia did not consider her light a gift. The Sunborn had been hunted for generations by those fascinated by their magic. She had spent much of her life hiding something everyone else thought beautiful.
One evening, they sat on a hill overlooking Embervale as lanterns appeared along the river and the final sunlight faded behind the mountains.
“Do you miss it?” Aurelia asked.
“The sun.”
Lucien stared toward the horizon.
“I don't remember it.”
The following evening, Aurelia placed a small stone in his hand.
It was warm.
Not burning. Simply warm in the particular way stones became after spending an afternoon beneath summer sunlight.
After that, she began recreating little things he had forgotten.
Golden light moving across water. The warmth of afternoon against old wood. Sunlight filtering through leaves. She learned to separate the dangerous parts of her magic from the gentle ones, giving him fragments of daytime without hurting him.
Lucien never told her how much it meant.
He did not need to.
When they finally reached the ruins, the mage hunting the relic was waiting.
Destroying it would require more power than Aurelia had dared release in years.
She told Lucien to run.
Instead, he stayed.
Light erupted through the ruins.
For one terrible moment, Aurelia shone brighter than the morning sky. Lucien felt the heat against his skin and knew what remaining beside her might cost.
Still, he did not move.
The relic shattered.
When the light faded, Aurelia found him beside her, injured but alive.
“Why didn't you run?”
Lucien looked toward the first pale line of dawn.
“I have spent long enough running from the light.”
Afterward, the people living near Embervale's old bridge began noticing something peculiar.
Every evening, shortly before sunset, Aurelia appeared beside the river. She waited as the sunlight slowly disappeared behind the mountains.
Then the final ray would vanish.
A moment later, Lucien would emerge from the shadows at the other end of the bridge.
Perhaps they could never have the day. Perhaps he would always belong to the night, and she would always carry something of the sun within her.
But between the two existed twilight.
And every evening, for a little while, twilight belonged entirely to them.
