Several courthouses have occupied this area over the years, including earlier structures that were lost or replaced. The current courthouse was built in the early 1900s and remains the centerpiece of the historic downtown square. 🎓 Athens State University We also pass one of the oldest institutions of higher education in Alabama. Athens State traces its beginnings to 1822, when it opened as Athens Female Academy. What started as a small school eventually developed into Athens State University. Historic Founders Hall, dating back to the 1840s, remains one of the most recognizable buildings on campus. 💈 Redus Barber Shop We also spot Redus Barber Shop, a longtime Athens community business. This old-school walk-up ice cream stand has been serving Athens since 1951 and has become known for soft-serve ice cream, milkshakes, banana splits, and its classic retro appearance.
