Young drifter Jess Harker (Robert Wagner) dreams of becoming a stagecoach driver on the main line, just like his hero, the charismatic guard Race Crim (Dale Robertson). When Race persuades his boss to give Jess a chance, the young man is thrilled—especially when Race gifts him a silver-handled whip for luck. But the stage carries $27,000 in gold dust, and outlaw Slater is waiting. When Race orders Jess to drive the coach to safety during the ambush, Jess disobeys, staying behind to help his friend. The result is catastrophic: passengers are killed, the gold is stolen, and Jess is left wounded and disgraced. Determined to redeem himself, Jess joins the posse led by Sheriff Tom Davisson (Rory Calhoun), a man who believes in law and order—unlike Race, who seeks personal vengeance for the death of the woman he loved. As Race turns vigilante, gunning down outlaws before they can be brought to trial, Jess must choose between loyalty to his hero and the difficult path of justice. Directed by Harmon Jones and based on the novel First Blood by Jack Schaefer, this taut, character-driven Western explores the cost of redemption and the thin line between law and vengeance.
