Can fabric softener make towels less absorbent even when they feel softer? Explore how cotton fibers, surface treatments and capillary action affect water uptake—and why absorbing water from your skin is a different job from drying on the rail. We discuss a 2013 surface-adsorption review, a 2021 study of softener-treated cotton and an experimental surface modification that improved assessed wiping feel without sacrificing softness in its investigated system. These are not a universal verdict on every current product. Household examples and proposed comparisons are illustrative, not tests we performed. Follow the care labels and product/machine instructions.
