The $3 Japanese Soak That Removes Any Stove Burner Grease Forever — No Scrubbing
Baked-on burner grease doesn't come off with force, because it was never just sitting there — it's chemically bonded to the metal. Maya Sato shows the $3 vinegar soak she's used for over forty years to bring burner grates and caps back to bare metal, with zero scrubbing and zero wire pads.
You'll discover:
Why scrubbing a baked-on burner can never actually work, no matter how hard you press
The acid + base reaction that dissolves grease instead of smearing it
The exact freezer-bag soak method for grates and burner caps
The stove-top paste trick that lifts burnt rings without a single scrub
The 30-second weekly habit that means you'll never do a hard clean again
What happens in the bag during the 30 minutes you're not supposed to touch it
Recipe / Ingredients (exact doses):
Burner soak: 2 cups (500 ml) plain white vinegar per gallon freezer bag, per grate. For heavy cast-iron grates: 3 cups (750 ml).
After the soak (do not rinse): 2 level tablespoons (about 30 g) baking soda per grate; 1 level tablespoon (about 15 g) per burner cap. Let it foam 3-5 minutes.
Stove-top paste: 3 level tablespoons baking soda (45 g) + 3 level tablespoons dish soap (45 ml), equal parts, mixed into a thick paste.
Weekly upkeep: 1 tablespoon (15 ml) white vinegar straight onto a cloth.
Method:
Stove off, everything cold. Lift grates onto a towel; twist caps free with a dry cloth.
One dry paper-towel pass over each piece to clear loose crumbs.
Place grate or two caps in a gallon bag with the vinegar, press air out, seal flat. Soak 30 minutes.
Lift out wet — do not rinse. Add baking soda as above. Let it foam 3-5 minutes.
One gentle wipe with a soft damp cloth, rinse in warm water, dry completely.
For the stove top: spread the paste, press plastic wrap over it, wait 15 minutes, wipe in circles.
Keep it clean: 1 tbsp vinegar on a cloth, 30 seconds, once a week. Full bag soak once a month.
