WHAT DID ANCIENT HUMANS DO FOR PLEASURE?
DID ANCIENT HUMANS HAVE PLEASURE ?
What if ancient humans didn't wait for life to become easier before they enjoyed it?
Around 40,000 years ago, someone took a vulture wing bone, a stone tool, and spent hours carving it into something that could make music. They weren't hunting with it. They weren't eating with it.
They were making it sing.
But music was only the beginning.
From ancient flutes and jewelry to cave paintings, storytelling, humor, children's play, and ritual feasting, archaeological evidence gives us clues about how early humans found enjoyment—and how many of those activities may have served a purpose beyond simple entertainment.
There's also a surprising twist.
The idea that hunter-gatherers had enormous amounts of free time becomes much more complicated when you count everything involved in keeping daily life going. Instead of separating "work" and "pleasure" as sharply as we often do today, ancient humans may have woven enjoyment into ordinary life itself.
And that changes the question:
Did ancient humans have more free time than us—or did they simply experience pleasure differently?
In this video, we'll explore the evidence behind ancient music, jewelry, cave art, stories, humor, play, and celebration—and what they reveal about the surprisingly human need to enjoy life.
