Today’s Challenge: Improving Deep Learning Models with Transfer Learning I started by exploring how Transfer Learning can be used to improve deep learning models for AI-based object detection. I began with a pretrained model, then moved through the main workflow: checking and preparing the imagery, creating training samples, generating training chips, fine-tuning the model, running AI detection, evaluating the results, and retraining when needed. Then, I moved from the general workflow to a practical application: Building Detection in Ras Al Khaimah (RAK), UAE. The objective is to adapt the model to high-resolution imagery of the area and improve its ability to accurately detect building footprints. The goal is not only to visually detect buildings, but to produce reliable and measurable GIS data that can be used to: 🔹 Detect buildings automatically 🔹 Count the total number of buildings 🔹 Extract building footprints 🔹 Calculate individual and total building areas 🔹 Analyze the spatial distribution of buildings 🔹 Evaluate detection accuracy 🔹 Continuously improve the model through additional training From here, my next challenge is to apply the same approach more extensively to agriculture and other geospatial applications, with a focus on achieving the highest practical accuracy possible. The ultimate goal is to move beyond detection and generate accurate, measurable, and actionable data — data that can support counting, area calculation, quantity estimation, monitoring, and decision-making.
