Do two groups really differ, or could sampling variation explain the gap? Understand the t-test with a simple classroom example and clear whiteboard animation.
We start with teaching methods, production machines, and clinical treatments, then follow one fictional study: 64 students randomly assigned to flashcards or rereading notes.
With 32 students per group, means of 75 and 70 marks, and an SD of 8 marks in each group, Welch’s independent samples t-test gives:
• Mean difference: 5 marks
• Standard error of the difference: 2 marks
• t = 2.5, degrees of freedom = 62
• Two-sided p ≈ 0.015
• 95% confidence interval: approximately 1 to 9 marks
Learn the null and alternative hypotheses, the signal-to-noise idea behind t, what a p-value means, why statistical significance is not practical importance, and when independent, paired, and one-sample t-tests apply.
The example is fictional and the plots are conceptual. Valid inference depends on the study design and test assumptions. A non-significant result does not establish equivalence, and a group difference alone does not establish causation.
