Every evening at Parque La Plancha in Mérida, Yucatán, I see the same scene. As the day ends, members of Mexico’s National Guard lower the enormous Mexican flag while a military band plays. The soldiers form a line, carefully fold the flag, and march away with it. It happens quietly. There’s no grand announcement and usually no crowd gathered specifically to watch. It’s simply part of the rhythm of the place. I’ve lived in Mexico long enough that these are often the moments that interest me most : not the tourist attractions, but the small rituals that reveal how a country sees itself.
