Will AI take the jobs your kid is preparing for, and what should students do about it? Mark Stucker talks with Scott Kosch, co-founder of the AI transformation consultancy NextAccess and author of Indispensable: A Student's Guide for Thriving in the Age of AI.
Scott explains how executives' worry, "what am I supposed to tell my kids?", became a book written for students rather than about them. He puts AI in historical perspective: the Luddites and the power loom, the move off the farms after 1900, and the job dislocation that came with the PC.
They get into why AI has become so controversial: AI washing, a sloppy rollout, messages meant for investors, fears about data centers, and why the free versions of the tools left people unimpressed.
Then the skills: memory and analytical skills, the two things schools and employers have prized, are exactly what AI does well. Scott lays out the five skills that matter now: AI fluency, judgment, adaptability, originality and human skills, and why students need to take more agency over their education. This is part 1 of 3.
