Your paycheck shows up as a number in an app. Most of the money behind that number was never printed. So who made it? And why did the banker behind Europe's first banknotes end up sentenced to death? We follow that number back through a loan officer's desk, London goldsmiths in the 1600s, a banker in Stockholm, America in the 1840s, when a dollar wasn't always worth a dollar, and a Pacific island where money was made of stone. Along the way: what the Bank of England and Germany's Bundesbank say about how most money is created today, how much of America's money is actually cash, and what happens to money when a loan is paid back.
