BMW has started series production of the fully electric BMW i3 at its Munich plant. It is the first all-electric BMW 3 Series based on the Neue Klasse platform, and it arrives with ambitious claims: up to 912 kilometres of WLTP range for the i3 50 xDrive and charging at up to 400 kW. This video looks at what BMW has actually built: a new electric sedan, a transformed factory, a regional battery and motor supply chain, and a different approach to vehicle software and driving control. We examine the i3’s headline specifications, explain the limits of WLTP range and peak charging figures, and compare BMW’s challenge with Tesla without treating the dramatic title as a literal quote or a proven claim about Tesla’s reaction. The real test is now in customer hands. Can BMW make the i3 at scale, deliver competitive real-world range and charging, and persuade premium sedan buyers to choose it over the Tesla Model 3 and other electric rivals?
