#declutter #garageorganization #mexicanmom Get The Old Mexican Way, the whole order of the house written down: https://oldmexicanway The car has lived in the driveway for six years, and the garage door only goes up long enough to push something else inside. It is not because you are lazy. A garage is the one room nobody ever taught you how to run. Over the years I have helped clear out more than forty garages: my own, my sister's, my comadres' and my cousins', and my father's, the summer he died. Almost every family gets rid of the same fourteen things. Here they are, and where each one goes, because nothing goes to waste. THE 14 1. The containers themselves: lidless bins, soft cardboard. A concrete floor sweats, so nothing lives on the floor. 2. The old decoration that was replaced. The new one comes in, the old one leaves that same week. 3. The luggage. Somebody is leaving home this year. 4. The second refrigerator (husbands, I was fair). Full of real food, keep it. Keeping soda, let the metal man take it. 5. The old hobby. The equipment changes faster than we do. 6. The old cleaning machines. Four vacuums in one two-bedroom house. 7. The old paint and chemicals. High, locked, labeled, original container, never in a soda bottle. 8. The old electronics. Call the nephew, save the photographs, recycle the machine. 9. The old movies and tapes. Keep the ones that are your family, and transfer them. 10. The boxes of books. If it matters, it lives inside. 11. The costumes. Halloween is in two weeks; let it be somebody's night. 12. The coats and boots. The cold is coming, and the family who needs a coat needs it now. 13. The old bedding. Would you put it on a guest's bed? 14. The paper. Paper in a garage molds. The papers that matter go in one tin, inside. And the one from my father's garage: para lo que venga. The honest word: chemicals and paint go to your county's free hazardous waste day, never down the drain and never into the trash. Old electronics go to electronics recycling after the photographs are saved. Who profits: the bins, the eight-hundred-dollar shelving system, the storage unit with a bill every month, and the second set of jumper cables. Nobody makes a dollar from a woman with masking tape, a pencil and one empty shelf. Tonight, do one: open the garage, stand in the doorway, and name what is in there out loud. Whatever you cannot name is where you start on Saturday. CHAPTERS 0:00 The car in the driveway 1:35 The first garage I cleared, wrong 2:24 1. The containers themselves 3:31 2.
