Walking around Machida POP Building (Tokyo, Japan)

20 Mar 2026 This place gives off Ming Arcade vibes, but is more locked down. Opened in 1968, this building was pretty normal until 2015 when a water pipe burst. Almost all the tenants moved out after, except one at the basement and one at the first floor. As all the upper floors are abandoned, they are closed off (quite securely, as Japanese take this quite seriously. Even if you can pass the plywood, the shutters are all down and locked). However I did see a video of someone who walked all the way up, it appears there's quite a bit of stuff I'd have liked to see. The second floor is only accessible as there are no toilets downstairs. Demolition would require convincing the remaining tenants to move. Not as easy as it is in Singapore though, which is why this building stands in disrepair. The lifts appear to have been modded in the 90s, however some old fixtures remain. Although the building itself is creepy and 90% abandoned, the one working lift continues to run well.
