Ethical dilemmas arise when workplace values, principles or obligations pull in different directions and there is no obviously correct answer. This lesson explores common examples, including conflicts between financial performance and sustainability, personal relationships and professional duty, and responding to inappropriate behaviour by a senior leader. You will consider how ethical decisions affect stakeholders, trust, morale, reputation and sustainable organisational growth, as well as the legal, financial and cultural consequences of unethical choices. The lesson then introduces a practical process for working through difficult situations: define the problem, identify the conflict, gather the facts, consult relevant policies, engage stakeholders and apply ethical perspectives. It explains the difference between utilitarian and deontological approaches, before highlighting the importance of considering short- and long-term consequences, documenting your rationale and reviewing the outcome. The key message is that a structured process can provide a reliable path through uncertainty.
