Between May and December 1980, Duran Duran developed their sound, their image and their ambitions inside Birmingham’s Rum Runner nightclub. They played their first concerts with Simon, worked with fashion designers Kahn & Bell, joined Hazel O’Connor on tour and prepared for an independent release. Then the major record labels came calling. This chapter tells the story of the fierce battle to sign Duran Duran—and how five young musicians walked away with an EMI contract and the opportunity to turn their carefully constructed world into a record.
