What happens when the path you spent years building suddenly changes?
In Episode 175 of heCast, Mike Chisholm sits down with Dave Schultz for an honest conversation about neurodivergence, career reinvention, mental wellness, fatherhood, creativity, and finding purpose through change.
Dave spent 16 years as a music teacher before program cuts forced him to reconsider his future. He eventually moved into information technology, where he has worked for the past 13 years and received national honours in his current position.
Dave also opens up about receiving ADHD and autism diagnoses later in life. He shares how finally understanding the way his mind works has influenced his career, relationships, parenting, and approach to everyday challenges.
Mike and Dave discuss the strengths that can come with neurodivergence, why children need support rather than judgment, and how parents can create a home where their kids feel safe being themselves.
Dave also shares the story behind Deep Strike Tabletop, a Twitch-based Warhammer project he created with his brother-in-law. It is a space where gaming, creativity, community, and goofiness come together—and a reminder that the things giving life color deserve a place in our lives.
In this episode, we talk about:
• Leaving a 16-year teaching career
• Reinventing yourself after an unexpected setback
• Transitioning from music education into IT
• Receiving ADHD and autism diagnoses later in life
• Recognizing the strengths of neurodivergence
• Creating a judgment-free home for children
• Giving kids tools instead of trying to fix them
• Creativity, gaming, and Deep Strike Tabletop
