The Plantagenets, Υorks, Tudors, and Stuarts followed, each leaving a major mark on history. The English Civil War (1642–1651) temporarily ended the monarchy, but it was restored in 1660. In 1707, the Kingdom of Great Britain was formed through the union of England and Scotland. The Hanoverian dynasty began in 1714, leading to the modern constitutional monarchy. Queen Victoria’s reign (1837–1901) oversaw the British Empire at its height.
