OUR LOANS
The Business Enterprise Fund (BEF) provides loans from £500 to £250,000 to businesses, helping them begin, expand and flourish.
1. Start Up Loan (Borrow £500 – £25k)
A Start Up Loan is a government-backed personal loan available to individuals looking to start or grow a business in the UK. In addition to finance, successful applicants receive 12 months of free mentoring and exclusive business offers to help them succeed.
The loan is unsecured, so there’s no need to put forward any assets or guarantors to support an application. Up to four owners or partners in a business can individually apply for up to £25,000 each, with a maximum of £100,000 available per business.

ABOUT BEF
BEF is a Business Partner for Start Up Loans, a government-backed programme which supports eligible business owners who have a viable business idea but no access to finance with competitive unsecured finance and support. BEF delivers Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund (NPIF) II Smaller Loans across Yorkshire and the Humber, a fund delivered by the British Business Bank.
As a not-for-profit social enterprise and a Responsible Finance Provider, BEF’s profits are reinvested into the loan fund and granted to organisations that encourage and build enterprise. Over the last 12 years BEF has invested £129.5 million in lending, added £518 million of value to the region’s economy, and created or safeguarded 17,610 jobs. In 2023/24, 29% and 25% of our total lending supported women-led and ethnic minority led businesses respectively.
