So I changed the opening number to something quieter than the one we had planned. Even after I stepped on stage, I could think of nothing but my voice. Then, midway through the second song, the sax began a longer phrase than usual. An improvisation no one had planned. The bass noticed at once and softened its tone. And I stayed silent, right where I was supposed to start singing. It can't have been more than fifteen seconds. No one hurried. It was as if the saxophone alone were walking slowly through the lounge. And then, strangely enough — the moment I began to sing again, the voice that wouldn't come slipped out with ease. Far more naturally than when I had been trying so hard to force it. When the show ended and I came back to the dressing room, the bassist gave me a thumbs up without a word. I laughed, and drank a mouthful of water. On nights that don't go well, there is a performance that belongs to nights that don't go well.
