New York City Leads Nation in Composting

Bridget Anderson the Deputy Commissioner of Recycling and Sustainability at NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) highlights how on Staten Island New York City leads the nation when it comes to composting operating one of the largest composting facilities in the United States. Their leadership aims to keep the air we breathe clean by reducing garbage hauling and tipping costs, reducing methane emissions - a greenhouse gas that is 30 times more potent than carbon dioxide, and helping prevent toxic leachate from forming in landfills and polluting our streams, rivers, and lakes. Most importantly they are transforming would be trash instead into nutrient dense compost to help community gardens, parks, and sidewalk trees thrive. This compost is created because New Yorkers are simply bagging their food scraps and yard waste and dropping them off at designated sites throughout the city. The compost is available for free to residents, nonprofits, and the greater NYC community to help transform NYC into the Big Green Apple.
