I Tested My Russian in NYC’s "Little Odessa"

After studying Russian for six years, I wanted to find out whether I could survive in in Moscow 2.0. So I headed to Brighton Beach in New York City, often called America’s Little Odessa, to spend a day speaking Russian with locals, browsing Russian bookstores, and exploring one of the most unique ethnic enclaves in the United States. What I found surprised me. From Cyrillic signs and Soviet-era products to conversations with Russian-speaking immigrants, Brighton Beach felt remarkably similar to parts of Eastern Europe.
