Weaving Back the Story: The Escobar Renovation Breathes New Life into an Old House

#housedesign #renovation Escobar Renovation is a project involving the renovation of an English Tudor-style home in the historic F.Q. Story neighborhood of Phoenix, Arizona. This area is known for its 602 homes, most of which retain various architectural styles that make the district unique, with homes generally being smaller than contemporary ones. The renovation aims to update a 1,100 square foot (SF) home that has largely remained untouched for nearly 100 years. The house's many separate spaces reflect the needs of a bygone era. According to City of Phoenix regulations, any exterior work must maintain the historic character of the home and neighborhood. The renovation project includes merging public spaces like the living room, kitchen, and dining area into a single, expansive open space, utilizing attic space to create a vaulted ceiling over the living room while retaining the original ceiling height in the kitchen and dining area. Sliding glass doors integrate the interior and exterior spaces. A 400 SF addition includes a master bedroom and bathroom, designed to be sympathetic to the existing home without replicating an older era. The new gabled addition features full-height glazing and operable glass sliding doors leading to an enclosed patio. A cantilevered concrete patio and walkway unify this new patio with another adjacent to the dining and kitchen area. The addition's master bathroom features a gabled space extending upward to a skylight for privacy. The addition is clad in a 22-gauge standing seam metal system with a charcoal kynar500 finish, creating a unified material appearance for walls and roofing. This project explores the challenge of integrating the architectural language of a much different era with modern needs, questioning how such a blend can remain modern. The renovation creates a dialogue between the existing historical and contemporary architectural languages, unifying spatial qualities and engaging perceptions of both modern and traditional home iconography.
