From the raid on Lindisfarne in 793 to the battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066, the Viking Age reshaped Europe and carried the Norse world across rivers, seas and continents. This complete history follows the ships that made Viking expansion possible, the Great Heathen Army, Alfred the Great, Dublin and the slave trade, the settlement of Iceland, the eastern routes to Rus, and the voyages of Erik the Red and Leif Erikson. It also explores Danegeld, Cnut’s North Sea empire, the conversion of Scandinavia and the final centuries of Norse Greenland. The Viking Age did not end because the Norse simply disappeared. Raiders became settlers, traders became subjects, and Scandinavian rulers built Christian kingdoms that gradually absorbed the world from which Viking expansion had emerged. Archaeology, chronicles, inscriptions and later sagas preserve different pieces of that transformation. A quick note: the visuals in this video are illustrations built to accompany the history, not real photographs or footage of these events. If a moment from this one stays with you, let me know which one in the comments, I read every one.
