Your rent renewal comes in with a number that seems to come from nowhere. A lot of the time, it came from software. The Justice Department, several states and a class of renters say rent-pricing software from RealPage helped landlords push rents up. RealPage and the landlords deny it. A group of landlords agreed to a $359,925,000 settlement for renters, and a federal judge gave it final approval after an October 15, 2026 hearing (MLex). No payments yet. Here's how the software works, what each side says, and how to check if you're owed. IN THIS INVESTIGATION • How rent-pricing software like RealPage's YieldStar sets the number on your lease renewal • What the Justice Department and eight states say the software did with landlords' private data • What RealPage says, and what it agreed to change in its proposed settlement with the DOJ • Where the $359,925,000 renter settlement comes from, and who counts • How to check if you're owed money before the January 29, 2027 claims deadline CHAPTERS 0:00 The lawsuit 0:49 So who decides what your rent is? 2:00 What does the government say RealPage did? 2:59 What does RealPage say? 3:50 Where does the $359 million come from? 4:39 Are you owed, and what changed?
