ReGrandy by Shortwav Labs is a unique VCV Rack module based on stochastic synthesis, combining Xenakis-inspired stochastic waveform generation with granular processing. In this tutorial, we’ll explore how ReGrandy works, including its stochastic breakpoints, amplitude and duration variation, granular processing, FM section, CV control, and some practical patching ideas. Instead of simply generating a repeating waveform, ReGrandy creates a sound source that can constantly evolve according to stochastic rules. This makes it especially interesting for ambient, experimental, generative, IDM, drone, and evolving sound design. Towards the end, we’ll also run ReGrandy through Wyrd by Shortwav Labs and see what happens when this already unpredictable sound source is combined with Wyrd’s feedback-based processing.
