Ravenshaw, Commissioner of Orissa, and Captain McNeil, potential for passenger and cargo movement. • Commercial Hub: It grew into one of the finest river ports on India's eastern coast, handling roughly 60% of the total trade and commerce between Odisha and Calcutta. • Trade Goods: Major exports included rice, salt, fabrics, and timber, while imports featured consumer goods, forest products, and oilseeds. • Global Connections: Passenger-cum-cargo steamers regularly sailed between Chandbali and Calcutta, with broader trade links reaching Burma, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Madras, and Southeast Asia. • Railways Impact: By the 1910s, trade activity declined due to the rise of the Bengal-Nagpur Railway, which diverted cargo routes.
