Skill-Based Matchmaking (SBMM) has divided the gaming community like no other feature in modern games. But is it truly necessary for fair and balanced gameplay, or is it a system designed with other priorities in mind? In this video, I take a deep dive into real data (CODs WZ API 2021) to uncover the truth about player distribution and why SBMM may not be as beneficial as it seems. Using probabilities and player statistics, I demonstrate that the natural distribution of skill levels already provides fairness. The chances of encountering highly skilled players, such as the top 0.1%, are incredibly low—so low that most players will rarely, if ever, encounter them. On the other hand, the vast majority of players sit in the average skill bracket, creating naturally balanced matches without the need for artificial matchmaking. I aim to make a clear connection between the data and the gameplay experience: SBMM doesn't enhance balance but instead creates predictable, repetitive lobbies that trap average players and frustrate those who want to improve. At the same time, it discourages skilled players from staying engaged, as the system actively punishes consistent performance. By breaking down these patterns and exposing how probabilities and distributions work, I argue that the natural makeup of player skill is fair enough on its own. SBMM, rather than improving gameplay, serves another purpose—retaining players for longer sessions and ultimately driving microtransactions.
