Rohtas Fort: A Monument of Conservation, History and Tourism In this episode of Xee Hoo , we visit the magnificent Rohtas Fort, one of Pakistan’s most remarkable historical monuments and a powerful testimony to the military architecture, engineering and history of the subcontinent. Built by Sher Shah Suri, Rohtas Fort rises dramatically across a natural mountainous landscape. Its enormous defensive walls, imposing gateways, bastions and ingenious water systems demonstrate the extraordinary engineering capabilities of its builders. The fort’s relationship with the natural terrain is one of its most fascinating features; rather than depending on an artificially created basement or foundation system, its architecture responds remarkably to the mountain itself. Today, an important conservation effort is underway at Rohtas Fort. The Department of Archaeology is working to preserve its massive walls and other historic structures. The beautiful Baoli, or stepwell, has been restored, while the fort’s wells are being maintained. Its historic frescoes and other artistic elements have also received conservation attention. The Mansingh Haveli is another important structure for which maintenance and conservation work is planned. These efforts demonstrate that Pakistan’s archaeological heritage can be protected and presented in a manner that allows future generations to experience it. Conservation, however, must go hand in hand with carefully managed tourism. There has also been debate surrounding restrictions placed on new construction in the vicinity of Rohtas Fort. In our view, protecting the visual setting, landscape and buffer area of a World Heritage monument is an essential part of conservation. Such restrictions should be implemented through transparent planning, consultation with local communities and appropriate rehabilitation or development alternatives—but the fundamental principle of protecting the fort and its surroundings should not be compromised. Rohtas Fort is not merely an archaeological site; it is an economic and cultural opportunity. Pakistan possesses an extraordinary collection of forts, castles, palaces and historic monuments. From Lahore Fort, Attock Fort and Jamrud Fort to Derawar Fort, Umerkot Fort and Kharan Fort, these monuments represent different chapters of the country’s history and architectural heritage. If properly conserved, interpreted and connected through professional tourism infrastructure, these sites can become major destinations for domestic and international visitors. Heritage tourism can generate employment, support local businesses, create opportunities for guides, artists, performers, craftspeople and hospitality providers, and generate revenue while strengthening public appreciation of history.
